The global scientific community has clearly communicated to the worlds’ governments that we must act immediately and boldly if we are to avoid runaway climate change.
Climate change is a global problem and although the UK will be one of the least affected countries, people need to make the link between their actions here on a local level and the impact this has globally. According to the Global Humanitarian Forum, it is estimated that more than 300,000 lives are lost every year because of climate change.
In December this year, representatives of more than 180 countries from around the world will meet for the fifteenth UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Copenhagen, Denmark, to establish an international agreement about tackling climate change, to take effect in 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol expires.
Climate350 is a local initiative that aims to raise business, political and public awareness and action that will provide a show of support for ambitious targets to be set at CoP15 Copenhagen. We will run a series of activities leading up to December the 7th when we will then hold our own CoP15 (Bristol) at the ‘3rd floor’, bush house, Bristol.
Our campaign objectives are twofold:
and community level.
To make these campaigns effective we need support form everyone – individuals, communities, business, local government. If enough people from around the world show support, our leaders will have the courage to act. Climate change is a global problem, we need everyone to make the link and start acting locally by joining with us now.
Why 350?
350 ‘ppm,’ or parts per million in the atmosphere. This is the level that the global scientific community has identified as the upper safe limit, from where we can avoid runaway climate change.
350 is a global movement focusing on the number 350 in creative awareness raising action. ‘The most important number on the earth.’ 350 also has the advantage in an international campaign, it being a number, of transcending language barriers.
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350ppm goal, a planetary day of action has been
scheduled by the 350 organisation on October 24, 2009 in various forms all around the world. Actions will take place at
hundreds of iconic places from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef.
Climate350 is adding Bristol to this show of support and we will be mobilising creative and exciting actions across the Bristol region.
Why now?
People are already being impacted by climate change, the clock is ticking and the time for action is now.
The Global Humanitarian Forum, founded by Kofi Annan has launched the Tck Tck Tck - Time for Climate Justice
Campaign - a comprehensive, unifying, global campaign targeted at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The campaign’s goal is to recruit Climate Allies from around the world. According to the Global Humanitarian Forum, it is estimated that more than 300,000 lives are lost every year because of climate change.
Climate350 wants to help raise awareness and add as many signatures as it can to the tck tck tck campaign during the next few months
“Today millions of people are already suffering because of climate change”, (Kofi Annan, May 2009).
“Many of the world’s most vulnerable communities face risks of severe and more frequent droughts, floods and storms,
sea level rise, and increased risk of famine and spread of disease. Climate Change involves a fundamental injustice;
it has been largely caused by the industrialised countries’ historic emissions, but it is the poorest and most vulnerable
people who will suffer its worst and earliest effects.”, (The Road to Copenhagen, DECC, 2009)
